The Government Accountability Office found that the committee responsible for handling certain misconduct complaints involving federal inspectors general needed stronger oversight and policies. None of the reviewed investigations was completed within the statutory 150-day time frame.

GAO reported that executive-branch agencies estimated $186 billion in improper payments in fiscal year 2025. It identified seven agencies with programs reporting high improper-payment rates for multiple consecutive years and found gaps in required reporting that reduced congressional visibility.
